Press release LORENZO UNDERGOES SURGERY

9 May 2008 | MCR News

MotoGP's newest race winner, Jorge Lorenzo, underwent surgery immediately on his right arm after taking his debut victory at Estoril.
Despite a stunning start to the 2008 season, the 20-year-old has suffered from forearm pain due to compartmental syndrome, commonly known as 'arm pump', during his first three premier-class races.
The surgical procedure, fairly common amongst MotoGP and Motocross riders, aims to loosen the muscle compression inside the arm in order to relieve pain and loss of strength, which typically occurs with compartmental syndrome when the muscle is under stress.

The decision was taken to go ahead with the operation, less than a day after his Portuguese GP victory, so that the Fiat Yamaha star can use the two-weekend break to recover before the next race, in China.

Lorenzo, who held a press conference in Barcelona afterwards, together with his manager Dani Amatriain, his mother María Guerrero and Dr Xavier Mir, head of arm surgery at the Institut Universitari Dexeus in Barcelona said:
"I was a little bit scared before the operation but now I'm very happy because it seems that everything has gone as well as we could have hoped!" "It was a hard decision to make but I think it was the best one for us because China is close, but not too close and we have time to recover. I have had pain at all three races, including Portugal, and at times it was very hard to ride the bike at the maximum, so we knew that the operation was the right course of action.”

The double 250cc World Champion has stunned the racing world with three pole positions and three podiums from his first three MotoGP races.

New TV deal for British Superbikes

MCR NEWS | May issue

©Eurosport LogoWith new BSB owners MSVR now firmly in charge, one of the first announcements has been the television deal which will see the 2008 Bennetts British Superbike Championship enjoying an unprecedented amount of both live and delayed UK and, for the first time, significant international television coverage from 2008 onwards, having secured broadcasting arrangements with Eurosport and Channel 4.
The move confirms British Eurosport in the UK as the undisputed home for live motorcycle racing with BSB joining live racing from MotoGP and the World Superbike Championships, being broadcast to over ten million homes through the Sky and Virgin Media platforms. The new acquisition, representing over 48 hours of live and 66 hours of highlights coverage of BSB in the UK is the start of a major new development for the British Eurosport 2 channel.

Fans will be able to enjoy a four-hour live race day show featuring both BSB races, the British Supersport Championship and Yamaha R1 Cup support races, all live from each BSB round. Race day highlights will also be shown that evening, and throughout the following week, including on Thursdays, a “British Superbikes Extra” show featuring all races from the weekend’s British 125GP, National Superstock 600 and 1000 and KTM 990 Super Duke Championships.

British Superbikes

The Eurosport Group has signed an agreement with MotorSport Vision that will also see BSB broadcast live and exclusive across Europe on Eurosport 2 and live on the Eurosport feed in Asia and the Pacific, opening up the championship to a potential overseas reach of over thirty million households in fifty-three countries.
Extending the reach of the championship even further, Channel 4, one of only five UK network terrestrial channels, will also broadcast a one-hour highlights programme on the Tuesday night after each event, with a repeat later in the week. The same programme will also be available on Channel 4’s one hour time-shifted and free-to-air service; C4+1 and marks a return for the broadcaster who last covered the action in 2005.

Stuart Higgs, BSB Series Director concluded: “This is fantastic news for everyone associated with BSB, the teams, riders, the manufacturers, commercial partners and of course the fans, all of whom will all benefit from the increased UK, and now worldwide, TV coverage of our events. Broadcasting is an incredibly complex and evolving environment and our hard work has paid off by placing the championship across many different and new broadcast and media platforms. We have in Eurosport and Channel 4, two very complementary broadcast partners who with their combined reach and technologies will ensure BSB is seen by as wider audience as possible.”

BRANDS POSTPONED BUT NEW DATE ANNOUNCED

6 April 2008 | Press release

2008 Bennetts British Superbike Championship - Rounds 1 & 2 - Brands Hatch GP, Kent

Hydrex Bike Animal Honda riders James Ellison and Guy Martin were left frustrated after heavy snow caused the postponement of the opening round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Brands Hatch today.

Despite an intermittent forecast, the paddock awoke to a slight covering which proceeded to get heavier as the morning progressed. However, it soon became apparent that racing would not be possible and at 11.15, Chief Executive of MotorSport Vision Jonathan Palmer made the announcement that racing was cancelled.

However, Palmer announced that plans to run the meeting at a later date had been arranged and as such, the racing from round one will be rescheduled for the weekend of May 10th & 11th meaning the full 12 round championship is still planned.

Shaun Muir (Team Owner): "Like everyone else, we are bitterly disappointed but there was just no way we could race and after our problems in practice, perhaps this can be construed as a blessing in disguise for us. This gives us more time to work on our bikes and hopefully by Thruxton, we'll have sorted one or two things out. You have got to feel for the fans as well as the organisers, this really has been disastrous and although it's good we have a rescheduled race, we have an even busier time in May what with three BSB meetings and the North West 200!"
