Moto Comp GiMoto Open Weekend

Posted on November 28, 2011 by admin

Here’s your chance to get your hands on the perfect custom made race suit!

UK GiMoto distributer, Moto Comp, is holding an open weekend in it’s new Hathersage office near Sheffield on the 2nd-4th of December.

Staff from the Italian factory are coming over especially for the event so that they can meet UK riders and racers, take their measurements and design their suits face to face. They’ll be in good company too as GiMoto wearing riders, Barry Burrell, Richard Cooper and Gary Mason will be on hand to talk about their choice of leathers. With over 30 riders in the BSB paddock as well as World Supersport rider, Luca Scassa, proudly sporting GiMoto’s kit, the suits come highly recommended!

Marco Simoncelli

Posted on November 28, 2011 by admin

Marco Simoncelli

Here’s to a real fighter.

Marco Simoncelli died yesterday 23 October during the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang. He was trying to save a low-side. It looked like he got the bike more upright with both tyres gripping but couldn’t get back up onto the bike. As he was hanging right off the right hand side of the bike and was getting drive from the back tyre, it veered across towards the right hand side of the track. The riders behind him, Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi couldn’t avoid him.

The race was stopped and subsequently cancelled whilst the medics attended to Marco, but sadly he died.

He will be very much missed and our thoughts are with his family and friends.

Blackstone Tek Carbon Fibre Wheels

Posted on November 18, 2011 by admin

After Alan Cathcart’s visit to the BST Blackstone Tek factory, covered in the July issue, UK distributor HPS kindly sent us a pair of BST Prepreg Carbon Fibre wheels to play with. We were shocked and impressed at just how light and how beautifully made they are. As well as looking good, they reduce the unsprung weight of the bike and, more significantly, substantially reduce both rotational and gyroscopic inertia  – allowing a bike to be braked later, turned-in faster (with less rider effort required) and gain acceleration – thus saving a bit of time at every corner on the track. Giles Harwood from HPS says that typically they’ll take 0.8 seconds per mile off your lap time and that the twistier the circuit, the higher the benefit (BST users have reported savings of almost six seconds at Cadwell Park – although that’s a very extreme example). Suited to riders all riders (even those who are new to track riding) on HPS’s website you can download many independent tests where  professional riders have, for example, found reductions of two seconds per lap at Donington Park Circuit – with no other bike changes or suspension adjustments.

Giles says “Many of our regular customers now typically buy a pair of BSTs as the first modification they make to a new bike because – in terms of £s spent vs. performance gained – they’ve learned they’re by far the best value”. As well as being lighter, the prepreg carbon fibre is far stronger and more durable than any Aluminium or Mag (or regular “wet-lay” carbon) wheel, making them very sought after used – and, because they’re clear lacquered, any damage would show up so you can prove they’re in good nick when you come to sell your bike.

They’re not cheap – at around £2500, but Giles reckons you rarely see a set on eBay for less than £2000, so, you potentially could own a set for the depreciation cost of only £500 or £600 over two or three years, meaning they compete extremely well with the array of other engine, suspension and brake tuning options you would need to throw at your bike to get that sort of major improvement in overall performance!HPS are on 01773 831122 and at www.bikehps.com/bst

Colin Edwards Latest

Posted on October 28, 2011 by admin

Here’s an update from Colin Edwards – his words say it all:

“Firstly, I want to thank everybody for all their messages of support since Sunday. The support and love has been overwhelming and it has been a great comfort to me at this difficult time. My heart goes out to the family and friends of Marco and I will miss him a lot, as will the entire MotoGP family. I watched Marco’s funeral yesterday and I really wish I could have been there. I wanted to go but unfortunately my injuries meant I was unable to travel. I know Valentino spoke to Marco’s family on my behalf and I thank him for that. It was a great service and a fitting celebration of his life. I also wanted to be in Valencia next week to give my support to MotoGP, but it is not going to be possible because of the surgery I need on my left arm. The top of my left humerus bone has got multiple small fractures but the cartilage that is around the top of the bone has been pulled off. The surgery will anchor the cartilage back to the bone but there is no nerve damage, so I should be 100 per cent in about four weeks.” – Colin Edwards

We wish you all the best for a speedy recovery Colin.

Living the Dream by Garry Dickinson

Posted on October 24, 2011 by admin

Garry Dickinson’s autobiography is an interesting mix of his memories from a racing career that spanned over 30 years and his thoughts and impressions on racing in the UK. And he’s not shy about saying what he thinks! From the struggle to find a sidecar partner each season to juggling married life and funding racing, this comes across as an honest account of the ups and downs of one man’s addiction to motorcycle racing. We struggled with the structure of the book in places, as the former 125 rider jumps from a chapter on his early racing history to an overview of his guide to the best and worst race tracks, but overall it’s an entertaining read. Garry has published the book himself, and is handling the distribution too so you won’t find it in the shops, but you can get your copy direct from jacqueline1965@sky.com. It costs £8.99 + postage and packing.

Cordona Quick Shifter System for the BMW S1000 RR

Posted on October 24, 2011 by admin

Here at Racer we know the importance of getting the right set up for the track. But it’s not easy, as BMW S1000 RR owners have found out – the standard quick shifter often causes problems with the gearbox.

Cordona have come up with a solution – a plug and play quick shifter, specifically designed for the S1000 RR. Developed with Stiggy Motorsport on their WSB CBR1000 RR Fireblade, it’s a variation on the ultra-reliable, multi-adjustable PQ8 system.

Ground-breaking features such as the world’s smallest strain gauge shifter switch, plug and play loom and a multi-adjustable control box and shift rod make this system a must for any serious racer. And there’s good news for those of us who don’t ride a BMW – it’s now available for all modern sports bikes!

It costs £382 including VAT and is available from www.moto46.co.uk (Tel 0845 205 4646)

Musical Chairs as Lowes Joins Rob Mac at Motorpoint

Posted on October 24, 2011 by admin

Alex Lowes has parted company with MSS Colchester Kawasaki after one too many incidents with the bike. Ian Lowry will take his place on the 2011 ZX10-R as Gary Mason’s team mate for the rest of the season. James Westmoreland has fallen out with Motorpoint Yamaha, and team manager Rob Mac has recruited Lowes to fill the empty saddle. This will be Alex’s fourth ride of the season – as you’ll remember he started out this season on the WFR Honda EVO bike but a berth at Motorpoint might be just what he needs. Meanwhile Jake Zemke has gone back to the USA, leaving a gap in Miles Schofield’s team which has been filled by – you guessed it – James Westmoreland. Westy’s role will be to test and develop the bike for next season over the final rounds.

Colin Edwards to Join Forward Racing

Posted on October 24, 2011 by admin

Colin Edwards’ contract with the MotoGP Yamaha Tech3 team isn’t being renewed for next year and he’s confirmed that he’ll be joining forces with the Forward Racing team to contest a CRT (Claiming Rule Team) bike in the 2012 MotoGP series.

The team want to use a Yamaha 1000cc engine and they are hoping to persuade Guy Coulon to help with frame. It’s unlikely we’ll see Edwards on the podium next year, though, as he sees this as a chance to use his test riding and development skills rather than to get race wins.

We’ll be explaining the whys and wherefores of CRT in detail in the next issue of Racer but put simply, they aim to encourage more teams onto the MotoGP grid, by allowing factories to sell their race engines to other participants.

This means the Tech3 team have a new rider in mind. A possible replacement for Edwards could be Andrea Dovizioso, whose contract with the Repsol Honda MotoGP team is coming to an end, or perhaps a World Superbike rider. Bradley Smith wants to stay in Moto2 to hone his skills for another year so he is unlikely to be making the move up to the 1000cc machines any time soon.

It’s all speculation at the moment. The team hope to make an announcement at Aragon on 18th September.

The CRT concept will stick rigidly to prototype machinery though, so it’s not aimed at competing head on with Superbikes, at least in the foreseeable future, but it does narrow the margin between the two series.
